This piece emerged from the deepest strata of feeling—layered with an ancient reverence for the elemental body we call home. As I worked, I felt Earth not just as a planet, but as a sentient witness—bearing the burden of centuries, pulsing with the memory of both wound and wonder.
I began with gold leaf as a symbol of sacred value—anointing the canvas with the luminosity that Earth inherently holds. But I couldn’t leave it untouched. I poured chemicals, applied oxidising agents, and allowed time to scar the surface. I watched as corrosion crept across the gold like weathered skin—revealing that beauty and breakdown are not opposites, but companions.
Veins of darkness weave through the surface, like tectonic memories or fault lines of collective consequence. Rich ochres and burnt umbers bleed through—ashes of forests, blood of soil, and stories long buried. These marks were not painted—they formed, through reaction, surrender, and trust.
In Tribulations of Earth, I see a map—not of land, but of transformation. It is the Earth’s quiet scramble. Her dignity. Her endurance. It is also a mirror, reflecting how we inscribe ourselves into the land, and how she, in return, marks us.
This work is part prayer. In its fractured gold and mineral wounds, I honour the Earth not just for what she gives, but for what she bears. This is the sacred witnessing. The truth-telling. The alchemy of earth becoming gold once more.
